What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos
You’re engaged. But now you’re thinking to yourself “what do I wear for engagement photos”? This is such a fun season, and planning your engagement photoshoot is one of the first moments when everything begins to feel real. I’m 100% on board for taking photos with your wedding photographer. It’s a great way to get a feel for the way you’ll interact on your wedding day. Break the ice you might say. As you think through locations and timing, the question that always rises to the surface is what to wear. Your outfit sets the tone of your photos, and it helps you relax, move confidently, and feel like yourself in front of the camera.
Helpful tips to guide you as you choose your engagement shoot attire:

Dress for the location you pick for the photoshoot
Start by thinking about where your photos will take place. If you are in a park or garden, soft and romantic pieces like a flowy dress or an easy skirt fit beautifully. If you are shooting in the city, a clean and modern look might feel more in place. Let the setting inspire your outfit so the whole scene feels connected! But don’t feel tied to these pairings, sometimes a good contrast works beautifully.

Coordinate with your partner
You do not need to match. You simply want to look like you belong together. Choose colors or tones that complement one another without blending into a single look. Have you seen those old JCPenney photos? When your outfits feel intentional, your photos feel more unified. You can pick colors that are in the same family of warms or cools. Or just stick to neutrals… that’s always a safe bet! Here’s a great website if you’re interested in color theory and want to get some inspiration.
Choose something comfortable for your session
Comfort truly matters. If you feel good in your clothes, it shows in every photo. Pick something you can move in, sit in, and laugh in without fixing or adjusting. More than anything, choose pieces that make you feel confident and at ease.

Consider the season you’re shooting your engagement pics
The weather plays a huge role in both comfort and aesthetic. Fall naturally pairs with layers and richer colors. Summer works well with light and breathable fabrics. Winter invites cozy knits and deeper tones, while spring looks beautiful with soft colors and gentle movement. When your outfit fits the season, everything feels more effortless.

Do not be afraid of patterns
Patterns can add depth and personality, as long as they are balanced. If one person wears a noticeable pattern, the other should choose a solid piece. This keeps the focus on you rather than competing designs. With the right balance, patterns bring lovely character into your session.

Accessorize with intention
At the end of the day, your engagement photos are about who you are as a couple. Your outfits simply help tell that story. I offer outfit styling and custom mood boards to each of my couples so the process feels calm, creative, and genuinely fun.
And whenever you are ready to start dreaming up your session, I am here to help you plan every detail.
